The William Cushman Avery papers consist of letters, notes, essays, as well as several notebooks and printed material including magazines, articles, catalogs, and supplies lists. Nearly all of the collection of letters are to Avery, with only a few during 1887 that are transcriptions of replies written by him. In Series A, Letters, 1875-1892, topics discussed include ornithological matters, including bird calls, bird watching, bird specimens, bird eggs and nests, bird collecting and preserving, and bird names. The only other major topics discussed are hunting dogs and their training. In Series B there is a small collection of letters from Isaac Yearsley, 1887 Oct.-Dec., in which dog training is the primary topic. Series C contains notes, drafts of articles, and several bird watchers' forms; all the material relates to Avery's ornithological interests, and are of various dates. Series D is a collection of three notebooks, 1886-1893, which contain Avery's notes on birds, including some of those spotted in Ala. Series E is a collection of Smithsonian Institution receipts which acknowledge the donations Avery made to the Institution. The final series, F, is printed material, of various dates, which contains advertisements, catalogs, lists, and several natural history magazines. Major correspondents include Peter Bryce, director of the Ala. Insane Hospital and an avid hunter, C. Hart Merriam, Charles E. Bindere, A.K. Fisher, the Smithsonian Institution, and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy.
